TWO THINGS HELPED HIM SECURE SUCH SWIFTAND DECISIVE VICTORY One, he had a vision; and two, he had a crucial alliance. Lysander's vision for Sparta differed in that he didn’t want to just win battles, he wanted to overthrow the Athenian Empire.
While the other Spartans were caught up in a never-ending cycle of fighting, treaty-making, and rotating through admirals and leaders, Lysander went after the total and final victory.
